The scene then shifts to the said town, where a young man named Rakib arrives from Chittagong after completing his HSC examination. He is given an envelope by the person he is staying with, which contains banknotes for him to live on his own. A female student of class-nine named Shima also arrives at the town with her mother and goes to live in a house adjacent to Rakib's room. Rakib, who is new to the town, meets Shima and starts to get friendly with her. He is overjoyed when he finds out that Shima has the same birthday as him, October 30. However, he is disheartened when he finds out that Shima's father works in Saudi Arabia and will not return for some time. He then becomes even more happy when Shima asks him if they can be friends. One day when Rakib was returning from school with his notebook, he sees a man named Mahamud in a house adjacent to his room. Mahamud asks Rakib if he will let his daughter marry him in the future. Rakib, who is daydreaming about Shima, says yes and Mahamud convinces him to become a Haji and marry his daughter. After this, Mahamud gets out of the house and Rakib follows him up to his puja room where the latter sees Shima offering prayer. Meanwhile, as Rakib arrives home, he sees Shima's brother bathing in the water tank near their house. He is surprised as it appears that there is no bathroom in that house. He then goes up to the roof of his house and sees that there are live snakes there. He is shocked to see, however, that they are tame. He returns to his room and sees Shima's diary containing an entry saying "I love you." He then goes outside the house immediately after seeing her diary, where he meets Mahamud who tells him about their family tree. Rakib feels sad at first but later understands that it is okay because Shima loves him according to the entries in her diary. One day, after finishing studies, Rakib goes out for a walk along with his friend Anitra.
